Denny Blaine Nude Beach Gets a Temporary Reprieve
Seattle’s most infamous nude beach just scored a seasonal stay of execution. A King County judge ruled that the clothing-optional section of Denny Blaine Park will remain open until spring, following months of heated debate over nudity, neighborhood complaints, and city enforcement.
Neighbors had pushed to close the park, citing alleged lewd behavior and safety concerns. The group Denny Blaine Park for All sued the city earlier this year, claiming officials ignored ongoing indecent acts. But park regulars — including a longtime visitor known as “David the Mailbox Man” — insist the daytime crowd is self-policing. “It’s nude, not lewd,” he told KIRO Newsradio back in May.
In July, Judge Samuel Chung sided with the neighbors and ordered Seattle to submit an abatement plan within two weeks. The city responded by fencing off the park into “clothing-required” and “clothing-optional” zones — a compromise intended to respect the park’s LGBTQIA+ history while addressing reported misconduct.
Critics say the barriers have only deepened divisions. For now, though, Denny Blaine’s sunbathers can keep stripping down — at least until spring.
