On October 3rd, He Asked Me What Day It Was…

If you know, you know. Mean Girls fans will always hear Aaron Samuels asking Cady, “What day is it?” and her soft reply: “It’s October 3rd.” Somehow that tiny throwaway scene carved out its own place on the pop-culture calendar—right up there with April 25th (allegedly the perfect date) and the 21st night of September.
I’ve always had a thing for dates that sneak into movies and songs.
Crissy from Hair longs for a boy called Frank Mills who she met on September 12th.
Earth, Wind & Fire made us all remember the 21st night of September.
The Roches sing about being “born on the 5th of December.”
And for the true theater kids: Patrick Dennis showed up on Auntie Mame’s doorstep on October 1st—“curse the evil day,” as Nora Muldoon put it.
I love these little cultural touch points. They make the calendar feel less like a wall of boxes and more like a scrapbook of stories. And every October 3rd, my friend Tim posts the Mean Girls meme on Facebook—like clockwork—which never fails to make me grin.
So here we are: it’s October 3rd.
Summer’s officially gone. Spooky season has crept in. The year is sprinting to the finish line. Let today be your reminder that every date has the potential to mean something—if we let it.
Whatever you’re up to, make this Friday count. Kick off your weekend early. Wear pink if you feel like it. And remember: you don’t need a movie scene or a pop song to give a day meaning—you just have to decide it’s worth remembering.
Here’s to an unforgettable October 3rd.
