Once Again, I’m Heading Back Down to Mexico

Once Again, I’m Heading Back Down to Mexico

Today is going to be one of those slightly ridiculous travel days where I disappear into airports, baggage counters, security lines, immigration desks, and whatever other little adventures the travel gods decide to throw at me.

So, if you’re looking for me today, I’m probably going to be a little out of commission.

But this trip feels different.

I’m heading down this time for my permanent residency.

I honestly can’t believe it’s been four years since we started this journey. What began as spending more time in Mexico slowly became building a life there, buying a home, creating friendships, learning the rhythms of San Miguel, and realizing that somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like a place I visit and started feeling like home.

Hopefully, by this time next week, I’ll officially be a permanent resident of Mexico.

That feels pretty damn exciting.

I’ve also decided that instead of bouncing back and forth again, I’m just going to stay down there until our guys arrive for our Day of the Dead celebration at the end of the month.

Which brings me to today’s comedy routine.

I am traveling with four enormous pieces of luggage.

Yes. Four.

Part of that cargo includes the Pancho the Donkey coloring books I had printed for the neighborhood kids for Christmas. There are a whole lot of them, and I decided there was absolutely no way I wanted to be dragging boxes of coloring books through airports at the last minute later this year.

So today, apparently, I am part traveler, part pack mule.

There will be suitcases. There will be heavy boxes holding two snow machines. There will probably be moments when I question every decision that led me to an airport carrying half of Ohio with me.

But eventually, all of it will get there.

And tonight, if everything goes according to plan, I’ll be back in my house in San Miguel.

That part makes all the schlepping worth it.

So if you email me, message me, or need something today, don’t panic if I’m slower than usual. I’m probably trying to maneuver a luggage cart around a corner without taking out a family of four.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be around again.

Only this time, I’ll be answering you from Mexico.

And hopefully very soon, I’ll be answering as a permanent resident.
