Android Tips & Tricks Everyone Should Know

Whether you’ve been using Android for years or just switched from another platform, there are dozens of built-in features that can make your phone faster, safer, and easier to use. Here are some of my favorite Android tips that can help you get more out of your device.

1. Split Screen Multitasking

Need to browse the web while taking notes or watch YouTube while replying to messages? Android’s Split Screen mode lets you run two apps at the same time.

How to use it:

  • Open the Recent Apps screen.
  • Tap the app’s icon at the top.
  • Select Split Screen.
  • Choose the second app.

This feature is especially useful on larger phones and foldable devices.

Many newer Android phones include Circle to Search.

Instead of switching between apps, simply:

  • Press and hold the navigation bar or home button (depending on your device).
  • Circle, highlight, or tap anything on the screen.
  • Instantly search for products, landmarks, text, or translations.

It’s one of the fastest ways to identify almost anything you see.

3. Live Translate

If you communicate with people who speak another language, Live Translate can automatically translate:

  • Text messages
  • Conversations
  • Photos
  • Websites

Some translations even happen directly on your device, helping protect your privacy.

4. Nearby Share / Quick Share

Quick Share makes transferring files between Android devices—and even Windows PCs—simple.

Share:

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Documents
  • Contacts
  • Entire folders

No email or cloud storage required.

5. Create App Shortcuts

Many apps include hidden shortcuts.

Instead of opening an app first:

  • Touch and hold the app icon.
  • Select one of the quick actions.

Examples:

  • Start a new email
  • Create a calendar event
  • Open a private browser tab
  • Navigate home
  • Start recording audio

6. Pin Your Favorite Apps

Apps you use every day don’t have to stay buried in your app drawer.

Organize your Home Screen by creating folders such as:

  • Work
  • Travel
  • Photography
  • Banking
  • Entertainment

Keeping your most-used apps together saves time throughout the day.

7. Built-in Password Manager

Most Android phones include a password manager that can:

  • Create strong passwords
  • Store passwords securely
  • Automatically fill login information
  • Save passkeys for supported websites

Using unique passwords for every account greatly improves your online security.

8. Digital Wellbeing

Curious how much time you spend on your phone?

Digital Wellbeing lets you:

  • View screen time
  • Set app timers
  • Schedule Focus Mode
  • Enable Bedtime Mode
  • Reduce distractions

It’s a great way to build healthier technology habits.

9. Find My Device

If your phone is lost or stolen, Find My Device can help you:

  • Locate it on a map
  • Make it ring
  • Lock it remotely
  • Display a message on the screen
  • Erase your data if necessary

Be sure it’s enabled before you ever need it.

10. Use Voice Typing

Android’s voice typing has become incredibly accurate.

Tap the microphone on the keyboard to:

  • Dictate emails
  • Send text messages
  • Write notes
  • Search the web

It can often be much faster than typing manually.

11. Customize Quick Settings

Swipe down from the top of the screen and edit the Quick Settings panel.

You can add shortcuts for:

  • Flashlight
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • QR Code Scanner
  • Screen Recorder
  • Mobile Hotspot
  • Dark Mode
  • Wallet
  • Device Controls

Putting your most-used controls first makes everyday tasks much quicker.

12. Use Guest Mode

If you hand your phone to someone else, Guest Mode lets them use your device without accessing your personal:

  • Photos
  • Messages
  • Email
  • Apps
  • Files

It’s perfect when someone just needs to make a call or look something up.

Final Thoughts

Android offers an incredible amount of customization and productivity features, many of which are hidden beneath the surface. Taking a few minutes to explore your settings can save time, improve security, and make your phone much more enjoyable to use.

Whether you own a Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, or another Android device, many of these tips are available right out of the box.

Tech Tip: Don’t be afraid to explore your phone’s Settings menu. Android receives regular updates, and new features are added throughout the year that can make your device even more powerful.
