Power and Battery Banks
I’ve been relying on portable power banks and chargers for years. Through countless trips and everyday use, two brands consistently earn a permanent spot in my gear bag: Anker and UGREEN.
My husband often laughs and asks how many battery banks one person could possibly need. My answer is simple: when you rely on your devices every day, there’s no such thing as too much backup power.
The Anker Staples
Anker has been my go-to brand for years, and several of its products have become essential parts of my setup.
- Anker MagGo Power Bank: This compact magnetic battery provides the kind of convenience I love when I’m away from an outlet. Just snap it onto the back of an iPhone and start charging—no cables required. It’s small enough for everyday carry while providing enough power to keep my phone going when I need it most.
- Anker Laptop Power Bank: This is one of my travel essentials. It can handle everything from an iPad and accessories to power-hungry laptops, while the integrated retractable USB-C cable means one less cord to carry. It may not completely recharge a depleted MacBook, but it provides those crucial extra hours needed to finish a project or get through a long travel day.
- Anker Prime Desktop Charger: This is where Anker’s smart charging features really stand out. The companion app lets you control how wattage is distributed across ports, while the built-in display provides charging information and can even show custom images—particularly useful if you have more than one charger around the house.
The UGREEN Contenders
UGREEN has quickly become one of Anker’s strongest competitors in my setup, offering some clever features of its own.
- UGREEN Nexode Series Charger: This has recently edged out the Anker Prime on my desk. The built-in retractable USB-C cable keeps things clean and eliminates another loose cable. I especially like the digital display, which shows a functional clock and date alongside real-time charging information.
- UGREEN MagFlow Power Banks: These deliver solid performance, and the integrated lanyard-style charging cable is a clever touch. My biggest complaint is the physical design. The battery slightly overhangs the edges of the phone, making it less comfortable to hold and not quite as visually balanced as Anker’s MagGo.
The Verdict on Cables
When it comes to standalone USB-C cables, I’m comfortable recommending either brand. Both Anker and UGREEN make durable, reinforced cables capable of handling high-wattage charging and the abuse that comes with everyday use.
Ultimately, I don’t see this as an Anker versus UGREEN decision. Both companies make excellent charging gear, and I regularly use products from each. Anker remains my longtime favorite for portable power, while UGREEN continues to impress me with smart design choices—especially its integrated cables and useful displays.
And despite what my husband might say, I still don’t think I have too many power banks.
