Create Your Own Fantasy Life

This afternoon, I'll welcome six men to Cleveland for what we've affectionately dubbed Fuck Machine Weekend.

We'll spend the afternoon getting to know one another before heading out to pick up a few supplies. We'll stop by the dungeon for an introductory session, let everyone get comfortable with the equipment, and then head out for dinner. Tomorrow brings more time together, a possible visit to the bathhouse, and another evening at the dungeon with some local friends. There will be plenty of laughter, plenty of stories, plenty of food, and yes... plenty of debauchery. But most importantly, there will be friendships.

As strange as this might sound to someone looking in from the outside, I couldn't help but laugh when I realized something.

No high school guidance counselor ever sat me down and said, "Nick, one day you'll organize weekends like this."

No one ever suggested that this could become a life.

Growing up, we're handed a menu of acceptable futures. Doctor. Teacher. Accountant. Mechanic. Lawyer. Maybe entrepreneur if you're feeling adventurous.

Nobody tells you that you can invent something entirely your own.

Whether it's leading retreats, publishing a magazine, moving to another country, creating a community, or yes, hosting weekends that bring together people with a very specific shared interest, none of those careers were sitting on a poster outside the guidance office.

I had to build this life myself.

And so do you.

Maybe your dream has nothing to do with dungeons or naked men. Maybe it's learning Italian. Starting a woodworking business. Writing a novel. Taking dance lessons at sixty-five. Hiking the Camino. Opening a little bookstore. Buying the RV. Finally taking that photography class you've been talking about for ten years.

The details don't matter.

What matters is realizing that your life isn't something you discover. It's something you create.

Every decision you make is another brick in the house you're building.

So take the class.

Book the trip.

Start the business.

Lift the weight.

Write the first page.

Ask the person out.

Move to the city you've always wondered about.

Whatever you've been quietly dreaming about while worrying what everyone else might think...

Stop waiting for permission.

You've got one life.

Go build the one that makes you grin when you wake up in the morning.
