The Goal Isn't to Look 30
The Goal Is to Make 30-Year-Olds Look Forward to 60
Let's settle something once and for all.
The goal isn't to be the oldest guy who can still pass for 30.
The goal is to be the 60-year-old who makes 30-year-olds think, "Damn... I hope that's me someday."
Those are two completely different ambitions.
Our culture spends an incredible amount of energy convincing us that aging is something to hide. Dye the gray. Stretch the wrinkles. Tighten this. Freeze that. If you can make strangers guess you're 42 instead of 62, you've somehow won.
Really?
I'd rather have laugh lines from laughing.
I'd rather have a passport that's worn out.
I'd rather have stories than smooth skin.
And yes... I'd rather have a body that's been lived in than one that's been hiding under a shirt for the last forty years.
One of my favorite things about the GoNaked community isn't the nudity.
It's what happens because of the nudity.
When everyone takes off their clothes, something funny happens. The comparison game starts to disappear. You stop obsessing over perfection because you realize there are hundreds of different ways to have a beautiful body. Tall bodies. Short bodies. Hairy bodies. Smooth bodies. Gym bodies. Dad bodies. Bodies with scars, stretch marks, knee replacements, and the occasional mysterious mole that probably deserves a dermatologist's opinion.
They're all welcome.
And they're all living.
I've met men in their seventies who have more curiosity than people half their age. They're planning trips. Learning new hobbies. Falling in love. Making new friends. Trying something that scares them just enough to feel alive again.
I've also met people in their thirties who have quietly decided their interesting years are behind them.
Age wasn't the deciding factor.
Attitude was.
I'm in my sixties now, and I honestly wouldn't trade places with my 30-year-old self.
Sure, recovery takes a little longer. I make noises when I stand up that I didn't make in 1994. My knees occasionally send strongly worded letters of complaint.
But I also know who I am.
I care a whole lot less about impressing people.
I know which friendships matter.
I know that buying the plane ticket is almost always the right decision.
And I know that nobody reaches the end of life wishing they'd spent more time worrying about the little crease next to their left eye.
So lift the weights.
Take the walk.
Eat the vegetables.
Wear the sunscreen.
Get naked on the beach if that's your thing.
Not because you're trying to fool anyone into thinking you're younger.
Do it because you've got another twenty or thirty years of adventures to squeeze out of this incredible body.
Some younger guy is watching you, whether you realize it or not.
Show him that getting older doesn't mean getting smaller.
Show him that sixty can still mean road trips, bad decisions that make great stories, new friendships, and saying yes when life hands you an unexpected invitation.
The goal was never to look 30.
The goal is to become the man who makes 30-year-olds excited about turning 60.
